Steven Spielberg apparently can’t get enoughCall of Duty, which is a weird thing to say on its face - but if you think about it, it actually makes quite a bit of sense for the prolific director. The driving force behind some of Hollywood’s most imaginative films - things likeJaws,Jurassic Park, andET, Spielberg’s career is nothing short of legendary. Although primarily a film director, Spielberg’s career has occasionally intersected with the video game industry as well: he produced the firstMedal of Honor, and hisIndiana Jonesseries has inspiredat least one video game adaptation.

So it’s not too surprising to hear thatSpielberg himself dabbles in a little recreational gaming. You might expect him to be a bit more of a science-fiction or adventure game fan, but no - Spielberg apparently loves his first-person shooters. Still, if you consider a different quadrant of his film career, his love for historical war dramas makes perfect sense.

Steven Spielberg’s Favorite Game Series Is Call Of Duty

He’s An Avid PC Gamer

During an interview withMinnMax, Steven Spielberg’s son Max outlined his father’s love for video games, singling outCall of Dutyas the legendary director’s favorite game series. Max works in the gaming industry himself, havingdirectedLynked: Banner of the Spark, a colorful, action-packed roguelite RPG. He’s also worked as a designer on games likeBattlefield 1andAssassin’s Creed: Unity.

Max shares a passion for gaming with his father, whom he credits with introducing him to the hobby. He recounts a fascinating story in which Steven Spielberg metShigeru Miyamoto, creator of theMarioseries, andplayed a round ofWii Sportstennis against him. He also mentions that he’s been trying to get his father intoUncharted, noting its similarities toIndiana Jones- butSteven is a staunch PC gamer, and refuses to use a controller, instead preferring to stick to mouse and keyboard.

Steven does take Max’s recommendations, though, when it comes to first-person shooters:he’s apparently a big fan ofCall of Duty, and regularly relies on his industry-savvy son to tell him which FPS games are the latest and greatest. But don’t get too excited thinking you might’ve gotten 360 no-scoped by Steven Spielbergsporting a Seth Rogan skin- Max says he greatly prefersto play the campaign.

Spielberg Has A Penchant For WW2 & Historical Dramas

His Interest In Call Of Duty Makes Sense

Spielberg may be best known for his science-fiction and adventure films, but he’s also an accomplished director of historical epics. Many of his films, likeSchindler’s ListandLincoln, are grounded inhistory, a subject Spielberg clearly takes an interest in. It’s easy to see him getting hooked on the firstCall of Dutywith its World War 2 setting, then falling down the first-person shooter rabbit hole. ManyCoDgames still use historical settings, includingBlack Ops 6, which takes place during Operation Desert Storm beginning in 1991.

Besides that,Spielberg has directed a couple of war epics, includingSaving Private Ryan- it’s not too much of a leap to guess he appreciates the war drama aspect ofCall of Duty. That’d explain his preference for the campaigns over the multiplayer, too, as online modes are relatively story-light. Max does admit, though, that his father occasionally engages in a bit of multiplayerCoD, but typically only when his kids visit.

So, while it may be a little odd to imagine Steven Spielberg getting intoBlack Ops 6, it’s entirely within the realm of possibility. And given his penchant for history and war films, it’s not too surprising that Spielberg has an appreciation forCall of Duty.
