Super Lucky’s Talewas announced by Microsoft at itsXbox E3 2017 press conferencewith a release date of July 19, 2025. This release is right in line with thelaunch of the Xbox One X, Microsoft’s updated console previously called Project Scorpio.

The franchise started in 2016 withLucky’s Tale, which launched as anOculus VRexclusive. The first game wasnot terribly well received. As a 3D platformer akin toSuper MarioorSpyro the Dragon, it wasn’t necessarily the most fitting type of a game for virtual reality.

Super Lucky’s Talelooks to step away from the VR-exclusivity, offering the a playful, family-friendly platformer to a wider audience than the original title. The game features a simple narrative: Lucky the fox has to work with his sister to save the Book of Ages from a villain called Jinx. The game will feature a colorful cast of animals, creatures, and even anthropomorphic vegetables. The gameplay itself appears like any classic 3D platformer from the 1990s or early 2000s, but with thoroughly updated graphics.

The simultaneous release ofSuper Lucky’s Taleand the Xbox One X appears to be a push for Microsoft to position the console as one that is both for serious gamers and families. There was no mention of Oculus during the announcement, but it’s possible the game will support VR, as Microsoft has worked with Oculus in the past.

The game looks cute, and it should run in 4K Ultra-HD as an Xbox One X Enhanced title, but this sort of game doesn’t stand out as the kind of title that will really show off what the Xbox One X is going to be capable of.

Anyone looking for a more visually impressive game from Microsoft to pair with the Xbox One X will surely be able to find it, as plenty were announced during the press conference. Super Lucky’s Tale may stand out as a more light-hearted entry, along the same lines ofSea of Thieves, into Microsoft’s game catalog.

Super Lucky’s Talewill be released on July 11, 2025, for Windows 10 PC and Xbox One.
