The first demo presentation forTom Clancy’s The Divisionis one of the most memorable E3 trailers of all time. Showcasing some seriously impressive physics, that first trailer may not have been totally representative of the final product, but it did get fans hyped forThe Division, and in the end, it turned out to be a pretty strong game regardless. Though PvPvE games are becoming increasingly popular, withCall of Duty: Modern Warfare 2possibly having a PvPvE modeaccording to leaks, in 2016 that wasn’t the case. As such,The Divisionfelt like a breath of fresh air in a crowded military shooter market. Eventually,The Divisionspawned a sequel, and now, six years after the first game’s release, a mobile spin-off calledThe Division Resurgencehas been announced.
Revealed a week ago, at the beginning of July,The Division Resurgenceis a free-to-play titleheading to both Android and iOS devices. ThoughThe Division Resurgence’s story will be separate from the previous entries in the series, Ubisoft has hinted thatResurgencemay cross over with the rest of the series in certain aspects such as characters, plot points, and settings. On top of some returning narrative elements,The Division Resurgenceis also bringing its own additions to the franchise, including a brand-new faction called the Freemen.

The Division’s New York Factions
Taking place in New York,The Division Resurgencefollows in the footsteps of the very firstDivisiongame. Though an exact setting hasn’t been confirmed just yet,The Division Resurgencewill presumably take place during or after the events of the first game, where the Green Poison biochemical weapon has decimated New York City. Players will once again assume the role of a Strategic Homeland Division agent, tasked with restoring order to the city by any means necessary.
With the release of the Green Poison, New York was thrown into chaos, and in the disruption, several factions appeared, all looking to claim the city for themselves. There are three main factions in New York during the events ofthe firstDivisiongame, which are the Cleaners, Rikers Gang, and the Last Man Battalion.
Lead by Joe Ferro, the Cleaners are propelled by the belief thatthe only way to save New York, is to burn it down to the ground, regardless of any citizens left inside. To put their violent plan into action, Cleaners are equipped with flamethrowers, and are thus extremely dangerous to anyone crossing their path, especially any Strategic Homeland Division agents.
The Rikers Gang may not be as well-equipped as the Cleaners, but they’re just as vicious. A culmination of smaller groups, the Rikers Gang is composed of formerRiker’s Island convicts, who have all joined forces under the leader LaRae Barrett after they convinced the splintered forces to join together to overwhelm the government.
Originally hired by eliteWall Street businesses, the Last Man Battalion was a private military corporation tasked with defending valuable assets during the initial outbreak, but once the situation worsened, they were abandoned by their employers. Under Charlie Bliss, the Last Man Battalion now plans to take New York for themselves, solely through brute force.
The Division Resurgence’s Freemen Faction
Not a lot is currently known aboutThe Division Resurgence’s Freemen faction, but it can be assumed from their name that they’re a group who despise any form of governmental control, and likely believe that they should be able to live completely free of any rules or conventions. Based on the concept art released so far, it seems as though the Freemen have access to some heavy weapons and some rudimentary but effective armor.
It also seems as though the Freemen are capable of constructing their own powerful weaponry, with one image showing an armored Freemen wielding a giganticmakeshift mechanical crossbow. It’s unclear if the Freemen are working alongside any of New York’s other factions, but their presumed creed wouldn’t make that an unlikely scenario.
The Division Resurgenceis in development for Android and iOS.
