The Walking Deadfranchise hasn’t had the best luck when it comes to video games. The Walking Dead: Survival Instinctwas eviscerated by critics and shrugged off as shovelware, Telltale’sThe Walking Deadalmost didn’t even get an ending, andOverkill’sThe Walking Deadwas cannedafter years in development. Regardless, the franchise’s popularity ensures that video games based on it will consistently be released, and the latest is a virtual reality horror game calledThe Walking Dead: Onslaught.
The Walking Dead: Onslaughtis a VR game where players will be able to take on the role of their “favorite survivors” from the TV show. Based on the trailer, it’s safe to assume that Rick Grimes, Daryl Dixon, and Michonne will be included in the lineup of playable survivors. The game will feature “real-motion melee and ranged combat,” as well as a full campaign mode with an original story, player progression, and more.
So far, no platforms have been announced forThe Walking Dead: Onslaught. Considering this, it’s unclear exactly which virtual reality headsets will actually support the game when it launches later this year, but more information should come in the months leading up to launch.
WhileThe Walking Dead: Onslaughtmay sound appealing on paper, fans may be hesitant to get too excited about it. As previously mentioned,The Walking Deadfranchise has had a tumultuous relationship with video games, and that has resulted in far more lackluster titles than high quality ones.
Having said that,The Walking Deaddoes seem to be a property that would lend itself well to virtual reality. This should allow the game to at least feel different than the otherWalking Deadtitles that have come before, and perhaps it will be compelling enough to keep players interested for the long-term - something thatThe Walking Dead: Our Worldaugmented reality gamehas somewhat struggled to do.
Whether or notThe Walking Dead: Onslaughtserves as the first truly greatWalking Deadgame since Telltale’s first couple of seasons remains to be seen. We’ll have to see actual gameplay before making any judgment calls, so hopefullyThe Walking Dead: Onslaughtgameplay footage comes sooner rather than later.
