After Patch 8 ofBaldur’s Gate 3, the number of available subclasses was raised from 46 to 58.BG3playthroughs are known for taking days, and often weeks, to complete, so it’s unlikely that most players will be well-versed in the intricacies of every single subclass. Even thoughBG3has taken up the spotlight for well over a year, there’s constantly more content for people to explore - whether that be the most optimized class builds, mods, or end array of secrets.

Despite this, there’s one powerful subclass that offers a completely unique experiencethat shouldn’t be ignored. If you enjoyed playing around with Sovereign Glut’s Animating Spores, then you’ll love using one of the subclass' exclusive features. If you feel like you’ve exhausted Patch 8 of all it has to offer, some of the older content can still provide a new adventure.

Malus Thorm raises his hand in Baldur’s Gate 3.

This Exclusive Spell Is Learned At Level Three

TheOath of the AncientsPaladin is often considered one of the best tank builds, and the Oath of the Crown introduced in Patch 8 allows paladin characters to useSpirit Guardians- this makes it rather easy for the Oathbreaker to get sidelined. You can’t initially pick this from the character customizer, andlots of players won’t go into the game with the intent of breaking their oath. For those who want to make a character who isn’t the stereotypical righteous paladin, the Oath of Vengeance can often fill that role.

However, there is one ability fully unique to theOathbreaker paladin subclassthat has the potential to make your next playthrough all the more flavorful. The “Control Undead” ability allows you to expend a channel oath charge to keep one undead creature under your commanduntil a long rest. You can’tdirectlycontrol them, but they follow you around and fight on your side in battle. This doesn’t sound particularly powerful at first, but it’s always useful to have an extra ally on your side - the Shadow-Cursed Lands also has the largest array of formidable undead creatures to choose from.

As Long As The Creature’s Level Is Below Yours, You Can Sway It to Your Side

Something to note is that the spell has a few limitations. Firstly, the creatures you plan to control have to be below your level, and they need to fail a wisdom saving throwto be subdued. This means you can’t recreate Larian’s original plan forBG3by having Ketheric as a companion.Be careful if you’re using mods that lift the level cap - as Reddit userFrancimintdiscovered, this allows this spell’s power to go completely overboard, as a level 20 avatar can control even the likes of Ansur.

A handful of characters also have a passive called “Immune to Control Undead,“which is an annoying but necessary feature to prevent the player from becoming game-breakingly powerful. These NPCs in question are Withers, Balthazar, Gerringothe Thorm, and Thisobald Thorm. Unlike the rest of his family, Malus Thorm does not have immunity, and you’re completely free to take him on your adventure.

In harder gamemodes, creatures under your control will retain their legendary actions, which can be an absolute game changer. On top of this, any creature who dies in the Shadow Curse will be revived with the “Shadow-Cursed Undead” condition, which will cause it to be considered an undead creature. The most convenient minions to pick up this way are Karn’iss, who will become Shadow Cursed shortly after your first fight with him, and the Spectator from the Iron flask. If you wish you couldrecruit more evil alliesinBaldur’s Gate 3,the Oathbreaker Paladin may be your perfect class.
