I’ve been playing through all theGrand Theft Autotitles again recently, and even when I was younger, I always wanted an answer to one aspect that confused me. This mystery started inGrand Theft Auto: Vice Cityand has continued into all future titles. Most open worlds in video games have a cut-off point on the map where you can’t progress further, and this is usually due to terrain.

There will be roadblocks or rivers you can’t cross, butGTAhas something else. The entire map, whether Vice City, San Andreas, or Liberty City, is essentiallyplaced right into an ocean with no way in or outwithout a flying aircraft. WhileGTA 6might break a 28-yearGTAtraditionby featuring children in Vice City, this flooding issue will likely persist, and it’s time for the mystery be addressed.

Grand Theft Auto Has An Unexplained Global Warming Problem

Rising Sea Levels Must Be Of No Concern To The GTA World

Grand Theft Auto 3, surprisingly, has an actual way into Liberty City via two roads on the northwestern part of the map. They’re roadblocked, of course, but all future games ditched this map design. Starting withGTA: Vice City, these fictionalized recreations of real-life American places are not connected at all to any surrounding land. They’re literally islandssurrounded by water. Global warming hitGTA’suniverse hard, and while this was abold prediction forGTA: Vice Cityat the time, this flooding issue became more bizarre as the series continued.

San Andreas,GTA 4’sLiberty City, andGTA 5’sLos Santos and Blaine County all suffer from the same global warming issue. You’d think this would be themost catastrophic event in human history in theGTAuniverseand be a big part of the lore, but you’d be wrong. Not once is the apparent global warming problem mentioned. It’s not in the cutscenes, not on the radio, not even on the in-game websites.GTAis known for its humor, so it’s incredibly odd that it isn’t even mentioned in passing.

There is, however, a clue hinting at the global warming problem inGTA 5. In several of the Barbershops, there’s a world map. It’s no ordinary world map, as it’s clearly been affected by global warming and resembles future predictions in the real world regarding how rising sea levels will impact Earth. Admittedly, the real-life version appears worse than the game. Still, there is no direct mention of this phenomenon.

It Would Be Great If GTA 6 Explained This Unsolved Mystery

We Need Answers

SinceGrand Theft Auto 6takes place in the HD universe along withGTA 4and5, it’ll likely have the same island-style game map. Many of thelocations have already been confirmed, but with this entry, Rockstar needs to explainGTA’sglobal warming issue. It doesn’t have to be in-depth, just a brief explanation ofwhat resulted in theGTAworld becoming what it is. As it stands, this global warming problem is a bit immersion-breaking for me.

I know the world ofGTAis supposed to be ridiculous. However, the fact that nobody mentions what should be a life-changing event, even if it’s decades old in the universe, is too absurd for me. In the real world, people would certainly talk about global warming decades after it hits for us, and with radio stations so abundant inGTA, how can no one bring it up a single time? Social commentary is rampant withinGrand Theft Auto, so even in that regard, the global warming issue has solid potential.
