The beloved FPS series,Timesplitters, has very recently been purchased by Austrian-based studio THQ Nordic via Koch Media, a subsidiary of THQ that also owns the publisher Deep Silver.
Originally created by Free Radical Games (later renamed as Crytek and then became part of THQ) and consisting of three games, theTimesplittersseries gained a massive fan-base thanks to its unique sense of humor, comic book-esque art-style, and customization options, giving every player the chance to create their own unique experience as they traveled through different time-periods to thwart the titular alien race.
Despite all three games being critical darlings, the series has essentially been missing since the last entry was released in 2005. A fourth game was in development but ended up being canceled, withits concept art appearing online sometime later, and a group of fans has been trying torecreate the trilogy under the title ofTimesplitters Rewind,but progress has been slow, with the original release date of 2017 obviously being pushed back.
The last bit of info we heard about it was in January this year. But with this acquisition, it’s more than likely that we’ll see an official sequel or remaster some time in the future.
In addition, THQ also now own the IP and rights toSecond Sight, another former Free Radical game that saw players control an amnesiac man with psychic powers trapped in a medical facility. Originally released in 2004, it received favorable reviews but unlikeTimesplitters, it never became a franchise. With THQ announcing the acquisition of this IP too, it may lead to something more as well.
While nothing has been officially confirmed, THQ did state that “full details of futureTimeSplittersandSecond Sightproducts will be revealed in due course.” Hopefully, this won’t lead to that aforementioned fan project,which was approved by the original developers, being canceled.
Regardless of what THQ has in store for either IP, fans of both IPs can now enjoy their reinvigorated sense of hope for the future.
