Today’s Connections Category Hints
April 29 #688
I was able to solve today’s puzzle by thinking about all the ways I interacted with certain words rather than their straightforward definitions. For example, the word PITCHER could refer to a pitcher in a baseball game, but if I interact with it, it’s more likely to reference a pitcher of water or lemonade I would drink. You’ll have an easier time finding today’s puzzle solution byimagining the context of words through the activities you do with them.

MIXTURE
PASTE
At first, I thought that BATTER, PITCHER, INFIELD, and PLATE were all words in a group to go along with a baseball-themed category. Upon making that mistake, I rethought about how else BATTER could be used when I interacted with it. From there, I realized thatBATTER and DOUGH were similar cooking bases, with PASTE and MIXTURE also referring to foundational parts of a meal that have to be baked or cooked to form something new.
PLACEMAT
PLATE
After figuring out PITCHER or PLATE wasn’t part of a baseball concept, I kept the words together and searched for others. My initial thought was that aPITCHER of lemonade would be great at a picnic, with a PLATE also being necessary for food. From there, a PLACEMAT was easy to fit into the group, but CANDLESTICK was a random guess that ended up being the correct answer.
ROPE
TREE
Climbing a ROPE and LADDER seemed like straightforward activitiesto me that aligned with today’s puzzle themes. However, it was tough to put TREE and MOUNTAIN into the mix, as I did not associate climbing as an activity with either of those words. After some time, I recognized that hiking up a MOUNTAIN was similar enough to climbing, allowing me to fit TREE as the final word for this part of the puzzle.
RHOMBUS
SUIT
This was definitely the hardest part of the puzzle for me, as I imagined INFIELD with a baseball concept at first. After some deliberation, my brain was still focused on baseball, so I thought about thediamond shape of an INFIELD. This made me recognize RHOMBUS as a diamond by another name, leading me to include GEMSTONE and SUIT for similar reasons, as they both had diamonds as a concept close to them.
