A newPlayStation 5update was released earlier today, and its patch notes (or lack thereof) contain what might be one of the most obvious notes about a software update to a console ever. Recently, PlayStation dropped asurprise console update for the PlayStation 4, also with very little specifics about what was truly improved or fixed. This new PS5 update might be slightly more expansive than that one, but what exactly it improves hasn’t been specified.
According to the official patch notes for version 25.05-11.60.00 fromPlayStation, the new update has just one note:“We’ve improved system software performance and stability.“This singular patch note does not have any additional information or details about what specifically was improved. There has also been no mention of the update by PlayStation on social media either.
PS5 Console Update Has A Single Patch Note On July 15
General Software Performance Improvements
While details have not been released, and PlayStation has made no statement about the update, this isn’t the first minor update the PS5 has gotten this year. Before this July 15 update, the version 25.04-11.40.00 also only had one upgrade:“We’ve improved the messages and usability on some screens.“That note, while still vague, is at least a little more specific than the one for this latest update.
The last major PlayStation 5 update added the highly-requestedcustomizable themes feature, which was previously teased with a limited-time event to celebrate PlayStation’s 25th anniversary. Generally, almost every hardware update seeks to improve the performance of the console or PC, so this patch note, while obvious, could mean any number of things.
Our Take: Small PlayStation Console Updates Like This Are Increasingly Common
More Frequent Updates, Less Meaningful Changes
It seems like PlayStation is putting out more updates now, but the upgrades are eitherinconsequential at a surface levelor the information about them is kept mostly a mystery, until players themselves discover something new about the console features or even changes within a game. It’s nice to get updates frequently, but without specifics, it’s impossible to tell if this update will change much of anything for most players.
Since the release of thePlayStation 5 Pro, fans have been asking for enhancements to various titles, especially for games likeSilent Hill 2remake that struggled to run well on the premium console at release. ThePlayStation 5and PlayStation 5 Pro are already stellar consoles, so it remains to be seen how much can be added or changed to improve the hardware with just firmware updates, but if this trend continues, small patches may become the norm for the console.
