Touhou Luna Nightshas just hit a nice milestone for itself three years after it launched in August 2018. The Metroidvania developed by Team Ladybug and published by PLAYISM and Why So Serious? has an overwhelmingly positive score from players onSteam, and now it has a quarter of a million units sold to go with that success.

After entering Early Access in 2018,Touhou Luna Nightsreleased its 1.0 version in February 2019 on PC. Console versions followed in 2020, including anXbox Game Pass version ofTouhou Luna Nightsthat adds mobile controls. The PC, Xbox, and Nintendo Switch versions of the game have added up to sales success.

The developer and publishers recently announced thatTouhou Luna Nightshas surpassed 250,000 units sold over its lifetime, which is not bad at all for a small but beloved indie title. While perhaps not mentioned amongthe best Metroidvanias ever made, Touhou Luna Nights’key focus on exploration and action help make it stand out. The time stop and “graze” systems are particularly unique, while the art style ofTouhou Luna Nightsis also colorful and expressive in its 2D pixelated approach.

This is not Team Ladybug’s first Metroidvania, as it has developed multiple games includingShin Megami Tensei: Synchronicity Prologue. While there are games likeAnimal Crossing: New Horizonsthat sell over 30 million units in a year, those types of numbers cannot be expected from an indie. Meanwhile, fellowMetroid-like indie gameDead Cellsrecently hit five million units sold, but those numbers are somewhat out of the norm. The team behindTouhou Luna Nightsshould certainly be celebrating the continued success of its game.

Touhou Luna Nightsis available now for PC, Switch, and Xbox One.
