Ever since 2010’sTron: Legacyrevived the classic sci-fi film franchise about the inner world of computers, fans have been hoping Disney would follow up with another sequel. Good news for them then, because it looks likeTron 3is not only in development, but already has a star attached to it.
If this sounds at all familiar, that’s becauseTron 3had actually been greenlit back in 2015, originally going by the nameTron: Ascension. Unfortunately, the project was scrapped not long after following the commercial failure of that year’s big live-action sci-fi Disney film,Tomorrowland. In the years since, however, rumors have popped up claiming that the movie was actually still happening, but as a reboot starring actor Jared Leto (Suicide Squad,Blade Runner 2049).

Alas, Disney has said nothing official about these rumors, until now. Speaking on the Light The Fuse podcast last month, Mitchell Leib, the president of Disney’s Music & Soundtracks division, revealed thatTron 3is officially back in development and has a “great script.” Furthermore, Leib stated that Disney is interested in bringing backLegacy’s director Joseph Kosinski and electronic duo Daft Punk, whose soundtrack was one of that film’s highlights.
Going off of Leib’s quotes, Disney fan site The DisInsider also reports that it had been told that the film will in fact star Jared Leto, but will be a sequel instead of a reboot. At the moment, though, it’s unclear if the movie will be based on theoriginalTron: Ascensionscript, which revolved around the digital world of The Grid invading the real world, or a brand new story.
