The cast also includes Damson Idris, Kerry Condon, Tobias Menzies, and Javier Bardem. Released in theaters on June 27,F1: The Moviehas received positive reviewsfrom critics and audiences alike for Pitt’s effortless charm and Kosinski’s kinetic direction, resulting in a stylish old-school action movie that has made over $300 million and counting at the box office.
Amid this critical and commercial success, work is quietly underway on a possible sequel toF1: The Movie. However, there are no concrete details on any returning cast members, story, or overall direction of the sequel.
Cruise Starred In Days Of Thunder
During an interview withThe National,Pitt said he would “love” to do anF1sequel with Tom Cruise, though he’s not sure exactly how it would work. At theF1premiere in London last month, Cruise made a surprise appearance on the red carpet to enthusiastically support the movie.
Cruise and Pitt have a long history, as they starred together in 1994’sInterview with the Vampire. Years later, they were set to reunite in their own racing movie together,Ford v Ferrari, with Kosinski as the director. However, those plans eventually fell apart and turned into the movie starring Christian Bale and Matt Damon with James Mangold as director.
Kosinski directed Cruise onOblivionandTop Gun: Maverick.
Additionally, during an interview withGQ,Kosinski said he is interested in making theF1sequel work as aDays of Thundercrossover. Cruise starred in the 1990 racing movie as Cole Trickle, a young stock car driver who gets a chance to compete in NASCAR. Kosinski shared his dream pitch for the crossover:
Well, right now, it’d be Cole Trickle, who was [Cruise’s]Days of Thundercharacter, we find out that he and Sonny Hayes have a past. They were rivals at some point, maybe crossed paths… I heard about this epic go-kart battle onInterview with a Vampirethat Brad and Tom had, and who wouldn’t pay to see those two go head-to-head on the track?
Last November,Cruise revealed that aDays of Thundersequelis in the works, so it’s possible that both sequels could be combined into one epic crossover starring Pitt and Cruise. Additionally, both racing movies are produced by Jerry Bruckheimer, who could work to orchestrate the crossover behind the scenes.
Though the crossover might sound crazy at first, the behind-the-scenes connections make it surprisingly plausible. Both movies have sequels in development. Pitt, Cruise, and Kosinski all have great relationships with one another, and Bruckheimer produced both movies. The stars are aligned, literally, for anF1: The Movie–Days of Thundercrossover.
