To the surprise of many, Valve appears to have announced plans for a majorTeam Fortress 2update in 2023.Team Fortress 2is now over 15 years old, and few would argue that Valve has largely moved on to other projects. Don’t tellTeam Fortress 2players that, though, because the team-based shooter continues to be one of the most-played games on Steam. Their cries for new content may have finally been heard by Valve.
The official update history forTeam Fortress 2lists 759 update releases since the game launched in 2007. But looking at the list of updates shows that there have been no more than one or two a year since 2017, and most of those aretemporary Scream Fortress Halloween events. Jungle Inferno of 2017 is looked at as the last substantial update forTeam Fortress 2, if not the Meet Your Match Update of 2016. It’s been a while, to say the least.

Team Fortress 2playersare going to be rewarded for their patience in 2023. A post made on the officialTeam Fortress 2blog confirmed that Valve is planning what it calls a “full-on update-sized update” for this year. The update is said to include not only new items, but also maps, taunts, unusual effects, war points, and “who knows what else?!”
Unfortunately, this isn’t an official unveiling of the new update, so there’s no specific information regarding Valve’s plans for it. Instead, it’s a call forTeam Fortress 2Steam Workshop creatorsto get in their submissions before May 1 if they want their creations to be considered for inclusion in the update. That perhaps implies Valve itself isn’t planning any in-house content for the update, but even a diverse selection of Steam Workshop content is more thanTeam Fortress 2has received in a significant amount of time.
Valve is describing the planned update as currently unnamed and un-themed, and while it does say the update is “summer-situated,” that doesn’t necessarily mean “summer-themed.” As such, creators can make what they like without worrying about a theme. Valve will hopefully be evaluating everything based on quality alone.
It’s astonishing to think this might be the first substantial update forTeam Fortress 2in years, given the game’s continued popularity on Steam. HowTeam Fortress 2has continued to be so popularremains a complete mystery, given the lack of support it has received. Hopefully, this summer’s update won’t be the last.
Team Fortress 2is available now on PC.
