BosunWihan Du ToitwasBelow Deck Down Under’sseason 3 villain, lasting eleven episodes before he was eventually fired. Wihan, who is originally from South Africa, worked alongsideCaptain Jason Chambersin the third spinoff ofBelow Deck. While the show’s first two seasons were set in Australia, season 3 saw a departure from the norm as it moved to a new location in the Seychelles. Along with the exit of former Chief StewAesha Scott, season 3 marked a new beginning forBDDU, but it wasn’t all positive.
Wihan’s charm and good looks made him a popular cast member at the show’s premiere. However, a darker side soon emerged. Wihan lacked the leadership skills required of a bosun, skirting the blame for his own mistakes as well as those of his team. He found himself in a love triangle with Chef Tzarina Mace-Ralph and Stew Marina Marcondes de Barros, then later pursued Deck/Stew Adair Werley while still shamelessly flirting with Tzarina and Marina. But it was Wihan’s terrible treatment of his team and his increasingly negative attitude that ultimately led to his demise onBDDU.
Wihan’s Journey On Below Deck Down Under
He Started The Season As Bosun
Wihan joined Captain Jason’s team as a bosun withnine years of yachting experience. But despite his qualifications, he made a string of careless errors. Wihan allowed charter guests to use a jetski that was clearly damaged, causing it to nearly sink while carrying a guest who was unable to swim. He then arranged a beach excursion that went awry while he remained back on motoryacht Katina, leaving Tzarina and Chief Stew Lara Rigby scrambling to salvage the guests’ experience.
Later, Wihan left Deckhand Johnny Arvanitis to clean up after a late-night foam party, an impossible task for one person. When the deck wasn’t cleaned before the guests arrived for breakfast,Wihan blamed his team rather than taking accountability as the head of the exterior department. This contributed to growing tensions with Deckhand Harry Van Vliet, who found himself on the receiving end of Wihan’s wrath. Meanwhile, Lara was exasperated by having to clean up Wihan’s messes, but he stubbornly shot down her suggestions.
Captain Jason noticed the growing air of negativity on board, and he made it clear he wouldn’t tolerate it. The breaking point came after Johnny caught Wihan in bed with his girlfriend, Alesia Harris, after previously warning Wihan to tone down his womanizing ways. The incident led to a closer investigation into Wihan’s behavior, and Captain Jason heard complaints from Lara, Tzarina, and Harry about Wihan’s increasingly toxic energy.
The captain decided to terminate Wihan for the sake of the remaining crew, leading to his departure from the Katina.
Wihan’s Spending More Time In South Africa
He’s Returned Home Since Filming
According to Wihan’s social media, since leaving the Seychelleshe’s returned to his South African roots. In January,Wihanshared photos from Agulhas National Park, the southernmost point on the African Continent. He appears to be soaking in the natural beauty of the South African landscape, from stunning beaches to breathtaking mountains.
While hisBelow Deck Down Undercareer has ended, at least for the time being, Wihan appears to be keeping himself busy with his impressive fitness regimen. In April,Wihanposted from Cape Town with the caption “TTOM 2025,” referring to theTwo Oceans Marathon. According to the event’s website, he completed the astonishing 56km ultramarathon course in under 5.5 hours.
Wihan Hasn’t Been Very Active On Social Media
BDDU Is Largely Absent From His Feed
Wihan’s Instagram has been relatively quiet sinceBelow Deck Down Underpremiered. He only made one post referencing his appearance on the showand hasn’t promoted it at all on his social media. It’s possible Wihan was aware of his villain status and didn’t want to bring attention to his role.
Even more telling, Wihan’s cast mates are largely absent from his Instagram.
None of his former costars appear to have commented on his posts, suggesting their relationships remain strained following his departure.
In contrast, most of the currentBDDUcast post news and behind-the-scenes information about the show, and they often support one another in the comments. This suggests Wihan likely cut ties with his crewmates after leaving the Katina.
Will Wihan Ever Return To The Below Deck Franchise?
Redemption Is Always Possible
Wihan’s run onBelow Deck Down Underwas not a positive experience, and he ended his tenure on bad terms with most of his crew mates.Wihan proved that he’s not an effective leader, and even worse, he berated his team and spoke down to them, damaging both their psyches and their job performances. His presence on the boat was largely destructive, and everybody on board was relieved to see him go.
However, Wihan’s return to theBelow Deckfranchise isn’t out of the question. His carelessness and string of boatmances created plenty of drama, which keptBelow Deck Down Underseason 3 entertaining. It’s also possible that Wihan’s experience caused him to take a hard look at himself and strive to do better in the future.Wihan could potentially return to the franchise with a redemption arc, but the stakes would be higher than ever if he wants to prove his competence in light of his past mistakes.
