The Rookieseason 7 has come to a close, andstar Richard T. Jones chatted withScreenRantabout why Sergeant Grey often covers for Lucy. Since the beginning of the series, Grey has always had a soft spot for Lucy. Lucy began the show as a fellow rookie officer alongside Nathan Fillion’s character John Nolan and otherThe Rookiecharacterswho have since exited the series. From the moment Grey got to know Lucy, he’s always wanted to look out for her, and has continued this into season 7.
At the 2025 Disney Upfront carpet, Jones explains why Lucy has the biggest impact on his character, Sergeant Grey. His character has become a welcome mentor for the rookie officers over the last seven seasons, but Lucy was one of the rookies Grey felt the most connected to.Despite seemingly being connected to Tim Bradford the most, Grey and Lucy have a familial-type bondthat Grey doesn’t really have with the other officers.
ScreenRant: Grey has his hands full with these characters and their shenanigans. Out of all the officers he’s seen come and go, who do you think had the biggest impact on him?
Richard T. Jones: It’s funny because when it comes to Grey and his connection—he’s connected to Tim. He’s connected to Bradford very strongly. But I think the officers that come and go, I think Seth had a little impact on Grey. Seeing somebody get wounded and injured like that, it kind of did something to his heart because he specializes in making sure all of his people go home at night, so when someone gets hurt, it affects him. But the nearest and dearest to his heart is probably Lucy. I’m always reading the script like, “I love me some Lucy, because everything she does, I kind of cover for her.” You know what I’m saying? Even though she’s great. But I think Grey wants her to succeed so much. I think when she succeeds, he’s going to get a fulfillment that I don’t think he has with everybody else.
