The newest trailer forStranger Thingsseason 5 offers a short glimpse at Vecna, but he looks very different from the last time he appeared. Vecna is the greatest threat Hawkins will face inStranger Thingsseason 5ashe tries to merge the Upside Down with Earth. Thecharacters inStranger Thingswill, inevitably, confront him face-to-face.
This is seen in the trailer for season 5, which reveals his return after theend ofStranger Thingsseason 4. However, when he does show up at 2:18 in the trailer,he appears much different than he did during his debut season. These physical changes may even hint at a new storyline involving how he’ll be defeated.

When Vecna shows up in the new trailer,he appears to be much spikier than he was in season 4. While he’s always had one hand that’s been bigger than the other, a brief glimpse of them in the trailer makes his clawed hand look even more massive than before. It appears he’s going to have a much grislier design.
This can be explained because of the injuries he sustained at the end of season 4. During the season finale, Steve, Nancy, and Robin set Vecna on fire in the Upside Down.Nancy shoots him multiple times with a shotgununtil he falls out a window. Unfortunately,Vecna managed to escape. Even so, the encounter explains his new design.

While the trailer doesn’t offer a look at Vecna’s face, thefirst poster forStranger Thingsseason 5indicates how different he’s going to appear. His face can be seen in a red cloud, looking mostly similar to how he appeared in season 4. However, one notable difference is thatone of his eyes is obscured by the cloud.
Given his design on the poster, it’s possible Vecna lost his eye from the injuries he sustained in season 4. That doesn’t mean it’s gone for good, though.InDungeons & Dragons, where his namesake comes from, the Eye of Vecna is a powerful evil artifact, able to bolster the supernatural powers of whoever wears it.
With Vecna’s design altered and his eye possibly missing,the Eye of Vecna could become a key part ofStranger Thingsseason 5. All that’s for certain based on the trailer, though, is that the core antagonist is returning with a much spikier look, no doubt seeking vengeance for his defeat at the end of season 4.
