The upcoming sequel will be the first in the series to be directed by the original creator, Kevin Williamson, and rumors suggestlegacy characters could return, with Courteney Cox likely to reprise her role of Gale Weathers, and Patrick Dempsey rumored to return to the franchise for the first time sinceScream 3, as Mark Kincaid. Filming is set to get underway sometime this year, with a likely release date in 2025.
Does Ghostface’s Motive Have to Involve Sidney Prescott?
Sidney Prescott (Neve Campbell) has had more than her fair share of psychotic killers targeting her for nearly thirty years in theScreamfranchise. Her trauma isn’t over yet, as she will come up against a brand new Ghostface inScream 7. Campbell appeared in the first five Scream movies, but didn’t return forScream 6due to a pay dispute with Spyglass Media. However, the studio met her demands forScream 7, paving the way for Sidney’s return.
Due to Melissa Barrera and Jenna Ortega’s exits from the franchise, it is expected that Campbell’s original final girl will once again be the focus ofScream 7.This has led fans to question what the motive could be this time, and whether it will tie into Sidney’s story.Ghostface’s doesn’t have to be attached to Sidney in order for her to feature in the story, but it would make more sense if it was.
Richie Kirsch and Amber Freeman’s motive inScream (2022)wasn’t related to Sidney Prescott. They were targeting Sam Carpenter due to their obsession with the Stab franchise, and the secret about Billy Loomis being Sam’s father. Having said that, of course, there wouldn’t be any Stab movies without Sidney, as her story was the focus. Their motive actually did circle back to her, although in a less direct way.
Sidney was a supporting character inScream (2022), but she didreturn to Woodsboroto avenge Dewey’s death, and she became a target for the Ghostface killers. It would make sense if the motive inScream 7did center on Sidney, otherwise it would feel pointless to bring her back. However, this doesn’t mean it has to just be about her. The series often opts for at least two killers, so it’s likely this will be the case again inScream 7.One of those killers' motives might not focus on Sidney at all.
What Could Ghostface’s Motive Be in Scream 7?
If there are two killers inScream 7, and at least one of the Ghostface motives is linked to Sidney,it needs to be different from what it has been in previous movies.Fans generally feel that the killer shouldn’t be someone in Sidney’s family, after her long-lost brother inScream 3and her jealous cousin inScream 4both targeted her. Sidney has also faced enough wrath from the vengeful Loomis family, inScreamandScream 2,so its important thatScream 7doesn’t retread a motive that involves them. So who could be targeting Sidney Prescott, and for what reason?
The long-rumoredCult of Ghostfacecould appear inScream 7.Their motive would likely relate to the Stab franchise, which also isn’t the most original motive in a Scream movie. Another possible motive was hinted at in aSidney plot point fromScream 4,which could be expanded inScream 7.This involvesthe locals in her new town, who see Sidney as ‘The Angel of Death.‘Some of these people hold a twisted belief that killing Sidney would bring an end to the carnage that supposedly follows her everywhere she goes.
As for the other potential killer, it’s about time Ghostface targeted Gale Weathers for her role in each killing spree. She has written multiple books about the Ghostface murders, and profited from other people’s misery. Surely, there is a killer out there who blames her for everything, and wants her dead. Or maybe Stu Macher is still alive and wants revenge on Sidney and Gale, or someone related to him has a revenge motive against both final girls.
Stu’s nephew, Vince, was killed by Ghostface inScream (2022).The same movie also referenced the boy’s mother (and Stu’s sister) Lesley Macher, meaning she could be Ghostface this time around. There are many rumors circulating about possible new characters inScream 7.Once this information is confirmed or denied, there will be a better chance of predicting what Ghostface’s motive could be in the upcoming sequel.
