One of the best surprises at The Game Awards 2018 was thereveal of Obsidian’s new RPG,The Outer Worlds. Favorably compared toFalloutandStar Wars: Knights of the Old Republic 2, the game has been well-received by the gaming community in the aftermath of theFallout 76debacle. However, some may be worried that the game will have microtransactions or loot boxes that may impact gameplay, as we’ve seen in many other modern titles.

Luckily for anyone worried thatThe Outer Worldswill have microtransactions, narrative designer Megan Starks has confirmed that there will be none of them in the game. If there is any additional monetization inThe Outer Worlds, it will be through post-launch DLC, which is currently being discussed at the studio.

The Outer Worlds Gameplay

Whether or notThe Outer Worldsgets any post-launch DLC will be dependent on if the game does well commercially, but right now, things seem to be in its favor. The Game Awards 2018 reveal trailer was met with some enthusiasm online, and other reveals since its announcement have kept it in the public’s favor.

For example, it was revealed not long after launch thatThe Outer Worldswill use a classicFalloutdialogue system, something that has been missing from the most recent games in that franchise.The Outer Worldsis also promising an immersive and traditional RPG experience, complete with NPCs, AI companions, and more.

The comparisons to classicFalloutandKnights of the Old Republic 2have been positive ones, butThe Outer Worldshas also drawn comparisons to theMass Effectfranchise. Not long after The Game Awards 2018 reveal trailer, somegameplay footage was released, reminding some gamers of the glory days of BioWare’s sci-fi epic.

With the positive comparisons to classic western RPGs, well-received gameplay features, and the fact that it won’t have any microtransactions,The Outer Worldsseems set up for success. We’ll find out if it is able to live up to the hype when it launches at some point next year.
